Francesco Carones, MD, PCEO

Francesco Carones, MD is Physician CEO and Medical Director of the Carones Ophthalmology Center located in Milan, Italy, where he performs refractive and cataract surgery.

The mission of Dr. Carones and that of the Carones Ophthalmology Center is to exceed patients expectations by providing high-end service in a boutique facility where the doctors and the staff are aligned to provide an experience that goes beyond the medical/surgical procedure. The added value consists of a personalization of all services with increased efficiency, reduced waiting time, no waiting list, etc. Patients benefit from five-star, best-in-class service while receiving the medical and surgical treatment with all the latest technologic innovation.

Refractive surgery is exactly this “ad hoc” discipline where results like spectacle independence, quality of vision and better quality of life can be achieved in the vast majority of the candidates who meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria. And the results are so accomplishing and thrilling for both the patients and the doctors, that Dr. Carones elected this as his favorite and preferred specialty.

Dr. Carones is involved in refractive surgery since 1989 when he started pioneering the use of excimer laser. He participated at several clinical trials, including the first human study on hyperopia correction using erodible masks. He explored the application of mitomycin C after laser surgery. He was among the first to have access to the tracker-assisted flying-spot ablation technology and to propose LASEK. Currently he is a clinical investigator for major surgical companies. As for lens surgery, he was the first to implant a toric multifocal IOL, as well as a low power add multifocal IOL. His cataract and refractive surgery practice also include phakic IOLs, intracorneal ring segments, corneal inlays, corneal cross-linking, and refractive keratotomy.

Dr. Carones published many papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, books and book chapters on refractive and cataract surgery and corneal topography. His research activities lead him to lecture and present at major meetings on refractive surgery worldwide, including AAO, ASCRS, ESCRS, and ISRS. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Refractive surgery and member of the most important Editorial Boards. He currently serves as Board Member of several national and international Ophthalmology Societies, and he is Member of the Advisory Board of major ophthalmic companies.
