Patricia Smith, MD

Patricia W Smith, MD specializes in refractive cataract surgery, refractive corneal surgery (LASIK, PRK), corneal transplant surgery, and the KAMRA corneal inlay for reversal of presbyopia at Triangle Eye Physicians, an anterior segment specialty practice in Raleigh, NC.

Dr Smith graduated with honors from Duke University. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from Tulane University, winning the Hauser prize in Pathology.  Her residency in ophthalmology at the prestigious Wilmer Institute of the Johns Hopkins Hospital was followed by sub-specialty training in cornea and external disease at Johns Hopkins under Dr Walter Stark and the late Dr AE Maumenee.

Dr Smith served on the faculty of the University of Virginia in the departments of Ophthalmology and Pathology before her research led her to a sabbatical at the University of Alabama, Birmingham on a Prevent Blindness grant to study the molecular biology of Fuchs’ corneal dystrophy.

Dr Smith has authored numerous articles and chapters in textbooks in her sub-specialty, has authored patient education materials for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and served as a reviewer on a number of professional publications such as the American Journal of Ophthalmology, The AAOs Preferred Practice Patterns, and the NIH-funded Corneal Donor Study.

She founded Triangle Eye Physicians in 2002, and has served as the medical director of LASIK Plus in Raleigh.

Dr Smith is a board-certified Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and a member of a number of state and local professional societies.

Dr Smith has achieved certification in a number of excimer laser platforms (Nidek, Visx, Wavelight), femtosecond platforms (Intralase, Ziemer, LenSx), and the KAMRA corneal inlay.
