Joshua Frenkel, MD, MPH

Josha Frenkel, MD serves as one of the Wang Vision Institute’s team of leading ophthalmologists. With advanced fellowship training in anterior segment and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), as well as cataract and refractive surgery, he hones a comprehensive range of skill sets needed to diagnose, address, and treat a number of conditions that can affect a patient’s eye health. A new addition to our practice, Dr. Frenkel is quickly making a name for himself among the Nashville, TN community and has carried out a large number of new and innovative procedures at our premier ocular center. He looks forward to continuing close relationships with our diverse clientele (consisting of local residents and celebrities alike), as well as providing men and women from all across the country with the high-quality care that our practice has become known for.

Dr. Frenkel attended Oberlin College for his undergraduate education. After he earned his bachelor’s degree, he went on to attend Tulane University for medical school and residency. During his residency, Dr. Frenkel received a number of high honors, including the Millennial Eye Rising Star award, as well as the Young Ophthalmologist award at the Caribbean Eye conference. He has presented at multiple national conferences and even received the Best Paper of Session award at ASCRS (American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery) while still completing his residency.

Once he completed his residency, Dr. Frenkel was accepted to an anterior segment fellowship at Vold Vision in Fayetteville, AR where he received training and guidance from notable figures in the field of ophthalmology. His fellowship had a focus on microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), as well as cataract and refractive surgery. He also received top-tier training in the treatment of dry eye and cornea disorders.

Dr. Josh Frenkel is an anterior segment specialist who also focuses on care and treatment for glaucoma, cataracts, refractive issues, cornea disorders, and dry eye syndrome. Along with specializing in cataract, refractive, and glaucoma (MIGS) surgery, he also serves as Wang Vision Institute’s ocular surface specialist. Dr. Frenkel amassed a wide range of skills during his years of study, residency, and fellowship. While studying with the top MIGS training program in the country, he absorbed various new techniques and received training with numerous technologies to improve the vision and eye health of men and women suffering from glaucoma.

Dr. Frenkel grew up in Madison, WI. While he pursued his undergraduate studies at the esteemed private institute Oberlin College, he served a four-year letterman on the school’s baseball team. Although he is still new to Nashville, Dr. Frenkel has enjoyed his time in the city and looks forward to making new memories with our patients and the Wang Vision Institute family.

At Wang Vision Institute, Dr. Frenkel loves being referred to as the “Sock Doc” for his affinity of wearing themed socks every day! His patients always enjoy seeing which socks the “Sock Doc” has chosen for his day of providing optimal eye care.
