Kent Kirk, MD has been practicing ophthalmology in the Chicago area for more than 30 years. Early in his career, he joined his father and brother in practice, and today he has the unique opportunity to work alongside the next generation of his family, including his son, daughter, and two nephews. Practicing medicine as a family has been one of the most rewarding aspects of his career.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kirk has been committed to offering the newest and most advanced technology in refractive surgery. Unlike LASIK-only centers, his practice provides a full spectrum of refractive procedures, including LASIK, PRK, ICL, and refractive lens exchange. By offering this comprehensive range of options, he is able to confidently recommend the safest and most appropriate procedure tailored to each individual patient’s needs.
Dr. Kirk was personally quite nearsighted for much of his life and relied heavily on glasses and contact lenses. Witnessing the evolution of refractive surgery gave him the opportunity to free himself from that dependence. He underwent LASIK in 1998, and the results were truly liberating. As an avid swimmer, he often notes that contact lenses and water do not mix well. Over the years, he has also performed LASIK on two of his children, both of whom are now in medicine.
Giving back to those less fortunate has always been important to Dr. Kirk. For the past 12 years, he has participated in an annual cataract mission trip to Peru, helping restore sight to patients who otherwise would not have access to surgical care. While these efforts profoundly change the lives of patients, he feels he receives just as much in return. His children have accompanied him on many of these trips, serving as his surgical assistants. These experiences have strongly influenced their decision to pursue careers in medicine and have reinforced the importance of service and compassion.
In his free time, he enjoys traveling—especially adventure biking and hiking trips—playing golf, and swimming.
