FAST TRACK TO INNOVATION: Innovation, IP & Medical Advisory Boards

Co-presented with SCHWIND eye-tech solutions GMBH (no financial support)

Program Overview: Participate “Live Virtually” or “Asynchronously”

Leading ophthalmic innovator and program chairman, Michael Mrochen, Ph.D., invites all RSA members to participate in this unique course designed exclusively for Refractive Surgery Alliance Members and the senior executives and scientists from SCHWIND eye-tech solutions GMBH

Nearly all medical innovations begin with the clinician, yet very few clinicians participate in the innovation process, and fewer still are able to capture a share of the value which they create. This program describes the key elements of innovation – invention, design, IP, clinical trials, and medical advisory boards – to make engagement accessible. This is a program for every refractive surgeon!

The curriculum focuses on the clinical side of innovation, covering an overview of the device regulatory approval process, the genesis of new ideas, how physicians should tailor their center to participate in clinical trials. A key focus is on the intellectual property (IP) process and strategies to capture the value of IP, how to protect IP, and how to go from “idea to market”. Guest speakers include top innovators, industry experts, successful entrepreneurs, and Alcon device engineers and medical advisors.

A program highlight is the importance and benefits of participating in Medical Advisory Boards (MAB).

Credit for successful completion of this event is applied toward the Master of Refractive Surgery certification by the World College of Refractive Surgery& Visual Sciencss.

the Refractive Surgery Alliance.

Program Objectives:

By completing this program, participants should:

  • Understand how to identify “unmet needs” and turn them into opportunities to innovate.
  • Know about the resources available to research prior efforts, ongoing developments and the state-of-the-art for specific applications.
  • Understand the value, limitations, processes and alternative methods to protect Intellectual Property.
  • Know how to negotiate royalty participation, what is reasonable and customary, and how to strengthen their position in royalty negotiations.
  • Know how to position themselves to participate in Medical Advisory Boards to maximize value creation for themselves and the sponsor.
  • Gain insights about a major ophthalmic device by observing a highly functioning Advisory Board during the module.

This course includes the following topics:

  • Valuation: What makes innovations attractive to major companies. How much is your idea worth?
  • Bring Ideas to Market: How physicians can drive innovation, with specific, real-world examples from industry leaders.
  • A to Z on regulatory approvals – how the process works and how to engage in clinical trials, delivered by senior regulatory experts and some of the most prolific clinical investigators in ophthalmology.
  • Intellectual Property (IP): What makes it valuable, how to protect it, and practical approaches to securing royalties.
  • Innovation Stations – the story behind the success of key technologies in vision correction.
  • Ethical and regulatory considerations when working with manufacturers to innovate products.
  • Medical Advisory Boards – whey they work, why you should participate, and how to engage.

Forefront Refractive Surgery

June 23 – 26, 2022

Register Here!

“Forefront Refractive Surgery: LASIK, Presbyopia Correction & SMILE” is an exclusive course on advanced refractive surgery from London Vision Clinic. The aim of this course is to provide corneal refractive surgeons who are interested in starting or are already performing LASIK, PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision and small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) with a detailed description of all aspects of the three procedures.

The focus of the course will be on practical details and surgical pearls set against the backdrop of our experience of over 30,000 LASIK, 10,000 PRESBYOND and 8,000 SMILE procedures and research. Essentially, we consider this to be a surgical video-fellowship that enables the attendee to learn from complications as well as successes. Each aspect of the course is taught in granular detail so that the attendee will feel very well equipped to make improvements to their current practice or starting to perform LASIK, PRESBYOND and SMILE with a wide knowledge base to reduce the learning curve.

The educational content of the course has been approved by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, with a total of 20 CME points available (can be converted to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit).
