Juan F. Batlle Pichardo, MD

Juan F. Batlle Pichardo, MD is the medical director and founder of Centro Láser in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, which specializes in treating Neuro-Ophthalmology, Retina and Vitreous, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Squint, Cataract Surgery and complications in this area, Correction of Refractive Defects with Intraocular Lens (ICL), Accommodative Lenses (Crystalens)and use of Amniotic Membrane in Corneal Problems.

Dr. Batlle founded the Dr. Elías Santana Hospital, a project that allows people in vulnerable conditions, access to much needed ophthalmic medicine, care and vision correction services. For the work done with this project, Dr. Batlle received the “2016 Humanitarian Award” from the Duke Medical Alumni Association for recognition of his tremendous impact in the field of ophthalmology.

Dr. Batlle also directs an internationally acclaimed ophthalmic internship program that allows young ophthalmologists, nationally and internationally, access to a responsible internship work experience, and a wide exchange of ophthalmic knowledge and experience.

Additionally, Dr. Batlle created Banco de Córneas in the Dominican Republic, a non-profit organization that seeks to promote the donation of eye tissues for people with corneal conditions. Thanks to this work, the organization has made innumerable transplants, promoting the process of awareness about the importance of being a donor.

Dr. Batlle studied at the Duke University School of Medicine in the United States, where he obtained the category of Doctor of Medicine. He completed his medical residency at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. In 1993, he studied aspects of the prevention of blindness at the Institute of Ophthalmology in London.
He is a member of many prominent organizations including the Dominican Ophthalmology Society (SDO), the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness in Latin America IAPB / VISION2020, the Pan American Ophthalmology Association (APO), the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Refractive Surgery Alliance Society (RSA), and the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami: Retinal and vitreous surgery, Neurophthalmology and pediatric ophthalmology. Dr. Batlle is the author of the book “Theoretical Manual – Practical of Ophthalmology. He also regularly collaborates with different specialized journals in the ophthalmological area.
