Mark “Kelly” Herschel, MD

Mark “Kelly” Herschel, MD was born and raised in Tulsa, OK and was the second youngest of seven children. His parents demonstrated throughout their lives that a combination of hard work, integrity, and always striving to do the right thing could lead to a high level of success. Using the lessons learned from growing up in this environment, Kelly was motivated to succeed in college at Vanderbilt University and to pursue a career in medicine. In his fourth year of medical school, Dr. Herschel fell in love with the eye. He found the interesting disease processes, the surgical techniques and the incredible possibilities that lay ahead for ophthalmology the perfect combination for a long-term career. At that pivotal moment, Dr. Herschel knew the career path he wanted to take. After residency, Dr. Herschel was committed to adding to his expertise by completing a two year corneal, external disease and refractive surgery fellowship at LSU in New Orleans. He had the great opportunity to experience first hand the development of PRK under the direction of Dr. Margaret McDonald who was an investigator during the FDA trials. Those experiences lead to a lifetime love of refractive surgery.

Upon finishing his fellowship, Dr. Herschel joined a multi-specialty practice in Orlando, FL. His way of practicing medicine evolved from lessons learned growing in a large family. As a patient, you can expect Dr. Herschel to treat you as if you were his family. His goal is to provide you the best vision possible not just for today or tomorrow but for the rest of your life. That may mean that Dr. Herschel may recommend a non-surgical solution over surgery when it is in the patients best interest for long-term eye health. He also has committed to taking care of each patient from the very first appointment. You can be assured that you as the patient will have his personal cell phone to extend your care outside the office setting 24/7. Having spent more time than he would have liked as a young adult in the offices of various orthopedic surgeons he has committed to making the patient experience the best possible from a beautiful environment to friendly and knowledgeable staff to a real person answering the phone and evening and weekend appointments.

Dr. Herschel continues to expand his knowledge for the purpose of providing his patients with the best solutions possible. As a cornea specialist, Dr. Herschel has had to perform hundreds of transplants on young patients with Keratoconus but was always hopeful for a better solution. As a result, in 2014 Dr. Herschel’s practice became an investigative site for an Avedro KXL study for the treatment of Keratoconus. His center now provides the most extensive options for the treatment of Keratoconus in central Florida.

When Dr. Herschel is not working he is usually boating, flying or traveling. His father began flying at the age of 17 in a Stearman 75 bi-plane and that interest in flying and traveling was handed down.
