Sheldon Herzig, MD, FRCSC, DABO

Sheldon Herzig, MD is the Chief Medical Officer for the Herzig Eye Institute (HEI) in Toronto and Ottawa. He co-founded the Herzig Eye Institute, a centre of excellence for refractive procedures both laser and intraocular. He was one of the first surgeons to perform LVC procedures starting in 1991 and has trained other surgeons from around the world.

Patients who choose to have refractive surgery at HEI can expect to be treated with the most advanced technologies in diagnostics, surgical equipment and intraocular lenses. In 2016, Dr. Herzig introduced the SMILE procedure to Canada which has become his primary LVC procedure. Other refractive options available to patients include PRK, LASIK, ICL, RLE, Refractive Cataract Surgery and Corneal Cross-linking.

Refractive Surgery is one of the most challenging and exciting subspecialties in Ophthalmology. The innovations are frequent and stimulating and the reward for patients is life changing which is something I enjoy experiencing along with my patients.

Dr. Herzig got his medical degree at the University of Toronto in 1973 and completed his Ophthalmology residency at the University of Toronto in 1977. He subsequently did a fellowship in corneal and cataract surgery at the Mary Shiels Eye Hospital in Dallas in 1978. As a result he was able to introduce phacoemulsification techniques and posterior chamber IOLs on his return to Toronto. Along with being CMO at HEI he is on staff at North York General Hospital and Humber River Hospital and is a Lecturer at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Herzig is married to Cherry Tabb, CEO and co-founder of HEI. He has 4 children and is an avid photographer. He stays active with golf, tennis and skiing. He and Cherry are involved with several charities contributing regularly to worthwhile causes.
