James Kelly, MD

James Kelly, MD is the Director of Refractive Surgery Education for Northwell Health and the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital (MEETH). With over 2000 five-star reviews, Dr. Kelly is the highest-rated LASIK, Cataract, and EVO ICL surgeon in New York City. Dr. Kelly is also the only ophthalmologist in NYC certified in every FDA-approved vision correction surgery — including LASIK, Laser Cataract Surgery, EVO ICL, SMILE, PRK, Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL), and KAMRA/Raindrop Inlays. Having performed over 100,000 successful vision correction procedures, Dr. Kelly is widely regarded as one of the most experienced and trusted refractive surgeons in the United States.

Dr. Kelly is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He earned his undergraduate degree from Columbia University and his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College (now Weill Cornell Medicine). He completed his internship in Internal Medicine at SUNY-Winthrop University Hospital (now NYU Langone), followed by a three-year ophthalmology residency at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital (MEETH), one of NYC’s top specialty eye surgery centers. After residency, Dr. Kelly pursued advanced training, certification, and research in refractive laser eye surgery, scoring in the top 2% nationally on the ophthalmology board examination.

Notably, Dr. Kelly was the first eye surgeon in New York City to perform EVO ICL surgery and has performed more EVO ICL surgeries than any other doctor in NYC. He was also the first ophthalmologist in NYC to use the Verisyse phakic lens (the predecessor to ICL), the Odyssey premium intraocular lens (IOL), Raindrop and KAMRA inlays for presbyopia, and Johnson & Johnson’s Veritas phacoemulsification system for cataract surgery. Dr. Kelly also serves as a nationally-certified Surgical Proctor for Staar Surgical and a Certified Instructor for Alcon, training other surgeons in the most advanced vision correction techniques. He collaborates with leading ophthalmic technology companies—including Johnson & Johnson and Zeiss—to ensure every patient at Kelly Vision receives the highest standard of personalized, cutting-edge care.

Dr. Kelly has been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor in New York City for 10 consecutive years. He is an active Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and one of just 24 doctors in New York State recognized by the Refractive Surgery Alliance. He is also a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS), the New York State Ophthalmological Society, and the International Society of Refractive Surgeons.
