James S. Lewis, MD

James S. Lewis, MD is the Director of the LASIK and Corneal Service at Salus University and trains hundreds of Optometrists each year in the management of LASIK before, during, and after surgery. Dr. Lewis’s surgical training videos are featured in the Video Journal of Ophthalmology and Eyetube.

Unlike competing LASIK centers, Dr. Lewis provides the vast majority of the pre-operative and post-operative LASIK care in-house including the management of dry eye. His office offers multiple treatment modalities including MiboFlow, and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), and functions as a referral center for patients suffering from dry eye from a variety of causes.

Dr. Lewis published his first peer-reviewed article on excimer laser photorefractive keratoplasty (PRK) in 1989, years before LASIK was approved by the FDA in the US. He was the first surgeon in Pennsylvania approved to perform the Visian ICL, the intraocular contact lens. He has remained at the forefront of LASIK and related refractive surgical procedures for decades and was the first and only practice in the region to obtain Nidek’s Topography-Guided LASIK Technology.

Almost 15 years ago, The Pennsylvania College of Optometry asked Dr. Lewis to bring his LASIK practice onto its main campus in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. Dr. Patrick McManamon joined the practice and is now the Director of Specialty Contact Lenses and Dry Eye. He and Dr. Lewis provide subspecialty training each year to a Cornea and Contact lens resident and an Optometric Fellow chosen from a pool of the top Optometry School graduates. These doctors now staff some of the most prestigious practices and LASIK Centers in the country.

Enhancing vision through refractive surgery rewards both the patient and the physician. Understanding the mechanics is dwarfed by the obligation to balance risk and reward. Dr. Lewis strives to explore each patient’s visual goals, expectations, and concerns. Through conversation and exploration, Dr. Lewis is empowered to chart the best path forward.

Innovation, technology, and compassion have guided Dr. Lewis’ more than three decades of ocular surgery, as he believes there is no better way to contribute.
