Priya M. Mathews, MD, MPH

Priya M. Mathews, MD, MPH is a cornea, cataract, and refractive surgeon in the Tampa, Florida area. She believes in personalizing every patient’s care according to their individual anatomy and visual goals for after surgery. Dr. Mathews is quite detail-oriented with her refractive surgery patients, paying particular attention to achieving the most precision as possible to ensure the most long-lasting outcome.

Dr. Mathews obtained dual degrees at the University of Maryland, with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology while graduating valedictorian of her class. She earned her medical degree at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she also completed a Master’s in Public Health with a concentration in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She completed her ophthalmology residency at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City and then pursued an additional year of training in Cornea, Refractive Surgery, and External Diseases at the renowned Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Dr. Mathews is praised by her patients and colleagues for her surgical skills, exemplary bedside manner, and expertise in the treatment of complex ophthalmic conditions. She has made significant contributions to the scientific literature and presented at many major national and international ophthalmic conferences throughout her career. Dr. Mathews is on the Medical Advisory Board for the Lions Eye Institute for Transplant and Research Eye Bank, and a member of the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) Scientific Programs Committee. She has been granted multiple academic accolades and has published over 25 peer-reviewed publications in top medical journals in topics ranging from cataract surgery, infectious and autoimmune corneal disease, novel corneal transplantation techniques, Dry Eye Disease, and Global Health.

Additionally, Dr. Mathews has a particular interest in addressing corneal blindness on a global level. She received the ASCRS Young Eye Surgeon International Service Grant for her research projects aimed to increase the availability of corneal tissue in developing countries. She has volunteered for numerous medical and surgical mission trips to places around the world, including Haiti, Guatemala, India, the Philippines, and Bolivia. Dr. Mathews is passionate about her work in global ophthalmology and continues to work with cornea specialists around the world.

Dr. Mathews lives with her husband and daughter and believes in living an active and healthy lifestyle. She is a certified Vinyasa and Hatha yoga instructor and enjoys running, hiking, and traveling in her spare time.
