Javier De la Torre, M.D. grew up in Bayamón, Puerto Rico and received a Bachelor of Science degree with Magna Cum Laude honors from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus. Dr. De la Torre then graduated summa cum laude from the Central University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. During medical school, he was selected for the United States Army Health Professionals Scholarship Program as well as the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
Dr. De la Torre completed a transitional internship at William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss and then continued training in medical and surgical eye care at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. There he received three research awards as well as the Colonel William C. Lloyd III, MD Leadership Award for outstanding work as chief of residents. After residency, Dr. De la Torre completed training in Refractive Surgery at the Warhawk Refractive Surgery Center at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
From 2009 to 2012, Dr. De la Torre served as an active duty ophthalmologist at William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss. There he helped initiate the refractive surgery program and was named Chief of Ophthalmology from 2011 to 2012. His military decorations include the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Meritorious Service Medal. Dr. De la Torre joined the Southwest Eye Institute in August of 2012.
Dr. De la Torre serves as Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at the Texas Tech Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso, TX and the New Mexico State Burrell College of Osteophathic Medicine in Las Cruces, NM. Outside of ophthalmology, he enjoys weight training, golf, and family time.
