Stephen Wilmarth, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist and founder of Wilmarth Eye and Laser Center in Roseville, California. Dr. Wilmarth has more than 35 years of experience performing advanced vision correction surgery and eye care. As a fourth-generation Bay Area native, Dr. Wilmarth understands the importance of providing clear vision to the California lifestyle and helps each patient achieve outstanding eyesight. By meeting personally with each patient, Dr. Wilmarth creates a custom treatment plan to provide the best outcome for each patient’s needs. With expertise in surgical and routine procedures, he offers excellence in eye care for the whole family.
Dr. Wilmarth brings a wide range of skills to his Sacramento-area practice. He has significant experience in new product development and application in pharmaceuticals and ophthalmic devices. Professional achievements that inform his high standard of care include nearly 20 years of experience performing LASIK operations (since the procedure was approved by the FDA in 1995), as well as performing thousands of cataract surgeries while maintaining an extremely low complication rate. In addition, he treats glaucoma patients by implanting innovative iStent® devices to restore health and reduce the need for outside medication.
Dr Wilmarth graduated with honors from the University of California, Berkeley, and attended Stanford University School of Medicine, where he participated as a research scientist in the first isolation and purification of endorphins.
After completing his medical training, Dr. Wilmarth joined the U.S. Public Health Service, caring for Native Americans and Eskimos throughout the state of Alaska. Humanitarian work took him to the Philippines, China, Tibet, Japan, South Africa, and Kenya. In 1989, Dr. Wilmarth returned to California and began a full-time practice as a founding member of Medical Vision Technology.
In addition to founding Medical Vision Technology and serving on the Medical Executive Committee that runs Sutter Sierra Surgery Center, Dr. Wilmarth is also honored to be a part of several societies, including the American Board of Ophthalmology, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the International Society of Refractive Surgeons.
Outside of his work at Wilmarth Eye and Laser Center, Dr. Wilmarth enjoys running, biking, skiing, golfing, mountaineering, and scuba diving. He finished the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii, swimming 2.4 miles in the ocean followed by a 112-mile bicycle race and a 26.2-mile run — all in one day.
