ABOUT: From BAD-D to BEES – A Journey of Innovation.
Ectasia risk assessment stands out as a critical safeguard for patient safety. The potential for iatrogenic ectasia after surgery underscores the need for robust preoperative screening — a process that has advanced dramatically over the past two decades.
Modern corneal diagnostics offer unprecedented precision, yet their complexity can overwhelm even seasoned surgeons. Artificial Intelligence is reshaping this reality, converting massive datasets into clear, actionable insights that improve safety, precision, and outcomes.
RSA President Renato Ambrósio Jr., MD, PhD, FWCRS has led this transformation. He is the “A” in the Belin–Ambrósio Enhanced Ectasia Display (BAD), a breakthrough that distills thousands of tomographic data points into a single, intuitive display for ectasia risk assessment.
The BAD-D v4 (Nature Scientific Reports, 2024) refines this tool with optimized diagnostic accuracy for keratoconus, very asymmetric ectasia, and surgical risk, all while maintaining the familiar interface for clinicians.
He is also the “A” in ARV (Ambrósio, Roberts & Vinciguerra), creators of the Tomographic and Biomechanical Index (TBI). The optimized TBIv2, the subject of his 2023 AOS thesis published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology, integrates tomography and biomechanics to achieve exceptional sensitivity and specificity in detecting ectasia susceptibility.
BEES is an acronym for: “BrAIN Enhanced Ectasia Software,” developed in conjunction with the Brazilian Artificial Intelligence Network (BrAIN).
BEES merges these innovations into a single AI-powered platform, integrating:
- BAD-D v4 – Optimized D value for intrinsic susceptibility detection.
- TBIv2 – The most accurate parameter for ectasia susceptibility detection.
- RTA (Relational Tissue Altered) – An AI-derived metric for procedural biomechanical impact, outperforming traditional RSB and PTA measures.
This combined approach enables surgeons to evaluate both intrinsic corneal fragility and the biomechanical effects of surgery, thereby directly applying the two-hit theory to assess ectasia risk.
You will experience a condensed, high-impact version of the Enhanced Ectasia Risk Assessment (E²RA) learning framework from Ambrósio Vision Academy, applied directly to clinical decision-making.
