This course will cover all aspects of the procedure and will be of great value to both new and experienced surgeons.
This unique program is offered under the leadership of RSA member Dan Reinstein, MD MA(Cantab) FRCSC DABO FRCOphth FEBO, who has been a major contributor to SMILE research and development. This program serves as the pilot program for the RSA Master of Refractive Surgery “Core Competency” Dimension.

PHYSICIAN CEO 2018 Program (Apply Today!)
The PHYSICIAN CEO program is developed by SurgiVision® Consultants, Inc. in collaboration with the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, a top-rated business school for executive education.
This program is unique in its focus on practice growth. Other programs train physicians to be managers, to run hospitals and to comply with regulations and billing procedures. The PHYSICIAN CEO program is different. It is explicitly entrepreneurial and focuses on topics relevant to physician leadership, particularly around private practice and entrepreneurial ventures.
The PHYSICIAN CEO program provides an intensive, MBA-style experience to train physicians with essential business skills. The program consists of four 5-day “Modules”. Each module is organized around core topics of interest to physicians across all private practice specialties and a variety of entrepreneurial ventures and is designed to accommodate the physician’s busy schedule.
In-person, live discussions are an essential component of business education. While an online course might seem to be more convenient, experience shows that there is no substitute for live teaching—especially given the high caliber professors at Kellogg, and the highly qualified participants in this program.
Course structure, cases, assignments, and general focus are directly relevant to running your medical practice. Major emphasis is given to strategy, leadership, negotiations, marketing, operations, finance, accounting, corporate structures, and legal topics, among others. Modules are designed to match the rapid learning pace of physicians and provide optimal exposure across the key functions of a Lifestyle medical practice. The “all-inclusive” program fee covers tuition, books & materials, housing, meals, health club and activities.
The PHYSICIAN CEO Program is delivered at the James L Allen Center @ Kellogg Executive School of Management on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. This is a recognized certificate program at Kellogg Executive School of Management and conveys Alumni Benefits accordingly.

Technology and Innovation Demension
The Clinical Side of Innovation: Invention, IP, & Medical Advisory Boards (Register Here!)
Developed under the expert guidance of Program Chairman Michael Mrochen, PhD, and Section Chair Helen Wu, MD, we bring this exclusive course to the Refractive Surgery Alliance Membership – “The Clinical Side of Innovation: Invention, IP, & Advisory Boards”. This is a course every surgeon needs to take. Think about it….nearly all innovations in medical devices begin with the clinician, and yet very few clinicians participate in the process. And fewer still are able to capture a share of the value which they create. This course focuses on the clinical side of innovation, starting with the genesis of new ideas, through the intellectual property (IP) process, royalties, and clinical trials.
A major focus of this course includes an in-depth study of how clinicians make themselves valuable as members of a Medical Advisory Boards (MAB) – what drives that value, how they can align their clinical goals with the companies that develop and sell products, how to anticipate the appropriate role as a MAB member for companies at different stages of development, and how their role is critical to ensure industry allocates resources for real advances and avoids waste.
The module culminates with an actual RSA Industry Advisory Board meeting where RSA experts will conduct a session to evaluate the current status and future opportunities for a major ophthalmic device.
At the completion of this course, participants will:
- • Understand how to identify “unmet needs” and turn them into opportunities to innovate.
- • Know about the resources available to research prior efforts, ongoing developments and the state-of-the-art for specific applications.
- • Understand the value, limitations, processes and alternative methods to protect Intellectual Property.
- • Know how to negotiate royalty participation, what is reasonable and customary, and how to strengthen their position in royalty negotiations.
- • Know how to position themselves to participate in Medical Advisory Boards to maximize value creation for themselves and the sponsor.
- • Gain insights about a major ophthalmic device by observing a highly functioning Advisory Board during the module.
Program Fee of $1,750 USD covers the course fee, program materials & handouts, breakfast, lunch & dinner. Space is limited and registration is required. Spouses/SO/Family members may attend the Saturday dinner paying only a dining fee. See registration for details. Disclosures and Qualifications: (1) This course is not a Continuing Medical Education activity. It is funded by the Refractive Surgery Alliance, Inc. without financial support from industry. (2) Products, brand names, investigational devices and off-label uses of approved devices will be discussed. (2) Participation is limited to current members of the Refractive Surgery Alliance Society. (3) Successful completion of this module will qualify for 1 of 3 Credits toward completion of the Technology and Innovation Dimension of the RSA Master of Refractive Surgery Program. (4) Modules for the Technology and Innovation Dimension repeat every two years.
