Andres Parra, MD was born in Bogota, Colombia and moved to his second home of Texas in 1999, where he discovered a passion for medicine serving as the interpreter for his mother, as a patient, and he noted the tremendous impact a good empathic physician can have on the quality of life of the patient and their family. Dr Parra chose to enter the field of ophthalmology due to the incredibly high impact ophthalmology allows him make in other peoples lives, by restoring ocular health, preserving vision, and furthermore, *improving* vision. When he finishes his residency training in Los Angeles, he plans to return to practice in Texas.
As a surgeon, patients can expect Dr Parra to be a great listener who embodies empathy and prioritizes addressing his patient’s needs customized by activities and lifestyles that mean the most to them. They can also expect a surgeon with extremely high standards and meticulous attention to detail, and exceptional responsiveness throughout the pre-, peri-, and post-operative process.
Dr Parra is motivated to practice refractive surgery to provide patients the ability to achieve a level of vision that is functional for their lifestyle and their needs. He is especially excited about the field as it continues to grow and develop. Dr Parra considers himself extremely privileged to be able to provide these services upon completing his training at the Jules Stein Eye Institute and is dedicating his career towards this purpose.
Dr Parra is particularly interested in all forms of refractive surgery, including cataract surgery, LASIK, PRK, SMILE, ICL with femtosecond laser, LRIs, as well as MIGS and dry eye/ocular surface optimization. Furthermore, he finds special interest in addressing diversity and inclusion within medicine, specifically within ophthalmology. Given his personal experience, he is excited to connect with Spanish speaking population that are underrepresented across medicine. By empowering present and future generations of under-represented minorities in medicine, Dr Parra believes the impact will inevitably be both positive and favorable on patient outcomes.
On a personal level, Dr Parra is very easy going, approachable, and a conversationalist, with an interest in people’s unique journey through life. His hobbies include fitness and exercise, hiking, playing and watching most sports, and going Latin dancing with my wife.
